This is the third vehicle in the Soviet Buran program — 2.01, or “Baikal.” Buran was built as a response to the American shuttle program, as the shuttle had a much larger Low-Earth Orbit cargo capacity than anything contemporaneous, and as such, posed a military threat. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the only orbited vehicle “Buran” (launched unmanned in 1988 for a three and a half hour orbital mission) was destroyed in a hangar collapse at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in 2002. In 2011, 2.01 was moved (and "renovated") for display at the MAKS air show.
I like to think of it as rising from the ashes, but the chances of these guys flying again is slim. (via Retronaut)
